John Gilmore: The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. Rudolf Winestock: The Internet interprets the absence of censorship as weakness and attacks it. N.B.: The above two statements do not conflict with each other.

Ruining a person's career because of a single bad joke.... This cancel-culture social panic is a sickness. We're fallible creatures and we make mistakes.

When I got the chance to interview Roger Penrose, I had a choice: spend the time making it understandable or trust my audience to come together. Using a Discord server, they are now annotating the entire episode as an actual community. Love these folks:

Last year it was proved that in a constructive setting the Cantor–Schröder–Bernstein theorem implies the law of excluded middle (LEM). and so while there is a proof of SCB that doesn't use the Axiom of Choice, one *must* use LEM.

Let’s be 100 percent clear: betrayed the Open Web and it’s values by explicitly supporting DRM at . Only within last few years have Mozilla taken privacy and security seriously. The future is - I hope everyone laid off keeps fighting for the Open Web there!

Calculus students know that lim [f(xo+h) - f(xo)]/h as h -> 0 is the derivative of f) at xo. However, if we let x = qxo, where q is a fixed number not 1, and h a fixed number and do NOT TAKE THE LIMIT, we enter the fascinating world of quantum calculus ->

What if instead of submitting papers to journals, academics just posted on or an equivalent open preprint server, and then journals proactively bid for the rights to publish the best papers? (Might be less meritocratic, if journals favored big names.)

Condensed matter physics is full of exciting revolutionary ideas that are being confirmed by experiment. So-called "fundamental" physics - the search for fundamental new laws - is not. Why not? Sabine Hossenfelder has a new article on that: (1/n)

Want to know FACTS and LOGIC? The first *serious* theorem is completeness of first order logic (Gödel's completeness theorem), from there you can easily get compactness and the Lowenheim-Skolem theorems. The other big theorem I'd suggest is cut elimination (Gentzen's Hauptsatz)
