I don't know "goal", but it's one of the hopeful side effects for me.

Well said. I was looking for a word that was less aggressive or off-putting than "purpose". I'll take the Danny-Devito-in-TWINS answer.

Absolutely. This is a big part of what
@aoscott's excellent book on criticism is about: https://www.powells.com/book/-9780143109976 … -
Great recommendation! I also read a piece he wrote in the Times along a similar vein. I think connecting with the public is essential as there are so many forces, market, political, etc., that attempt to cast doubt on the importance of cultural commentary.

I don't know about "goal"; isn't it simply the point? There's been a lot of talk about this in the context of Pauline Kael's centennial: How you might want to fight with her on the page, which was part of the joy of reading her. Engaging vs. dictating.

Engaging and debate for its own sake. Indeed. I'm essentially trying to formulate a concise statement that better reflects all this. I find a lot of people feel threatened by debate, as though it's an attack on their choices/tastes. Reframing it has helped. Thank you.

This makes me think of one of my favorite Ebert quotes: "It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it."
-
Indeed. I quote that all the time.
