Now out: In a preregistered study of 26k online diary entries, we found evidence for ovulatory changes in sexual desire and self-perceived attractiveness only for women who weren't on the pill. Little else replicated. OA version:

Increases in extra- and in-pair desire and in self-perceived desirability around ovulation (but not among hormonal contraceptive users).

Hey psych faculty, postdocs, and grad students among my tweeps! A colleague is conducting a short study (~5-10 min) about how we read empirical abstracts. Please consider completing it to improve how we disseminate our work!

See, people think Anscombe's quartet is all artificial extreme cases and no one would actually make such a stupid mistake with regression, and then you get figures like Fig 8C

Still, getting me to read this much about neuroscience and enjoy doing so is a feat. As someone blessed with NEAT (Non-exercise activity thermogenesis) I read this book for the science, not the advice. I look forward to the gaps and disconnects between areas closing up.

is also cognisant of (genetic) individual differences, although mainly as caveats to statements about general effects. Given that one of his main explanations is essentially an evolutionary mismatch explanation, I would have expected more on genetics.

The part on sleep reminded me of 's recent critique but for a good reason. While doesn't share 's deep skepticism of the consensus, almost all statements Alexey decries as caricatured in Walker's book seemed nuanced here

Just finished The Hungry Brain by after reading this review ages ago Quick enjoyable read. I liked the parts about food as superstimuli and that he's nuanced about gaps in our knowledge and causal as opposed to correlational evidence.

Very good thread on some straightforward things that would move most research areas forward in terms of improving the quality of our work...

fly less, give more: new blog post in which I argue that flying less is good, but there are also perfectly viable (and potentially much more effective) alternatives

Big changes... I think having or not having experienced such shifts explains well how my mother's generation vs. my generation feels about the pill.

Social sciences Twitter: 1) Why don’t I hear much about the claim that the estimated effect of parental education is going *down* in the US, conditional on educational attainment? Does everyone agree this is real?

We show a rapid increase of childbearing in female same-sex marriages over time. When taking both female spouses childbearing into account, childbearing after a marriage of female same-sex couples is now larger than in different sex-marriages. 2/5
