I’ve never been promoted, in 20+ years of working in software. Hadn’t fully realized it until I saw this thread & thought through all the ‘transitions’ I’ve been through. Every time I got more money, more responsibility, AND a different title, it was because I changed companies.https://twitter.com/kf/status/1081791425577021440 …

Whether it’s right or not, I’ve heard loads of cases of people being hired or promoted into “senior engineer” roles after 2-3 years. 5 years is plenty of time to expect a title change, given how much easier it is to switch companies.
-
Thats quite quick! I don't think time is the most important factor, but most "senior roles" at the companies I worked for were given to ppl with 5+ years experience in their stacks and 10 years overall experience. My currently company doesn't distinguish - we're all just devs.
-
I'm curious about the "just devs." How large is the team? How large is the org? I've been in this situation before, but I don't see it working in a large org.

From an entry level, I was expecting to be promoted within maybe two to three years. Well, I did that time, and I was basically told that promotions don’t happen, so I jumped ship for another job, which I admit I haven’t been at long enough to see if they’re the same way.

I would never expect to stay in the same job for 5 years

We start newbies out as “Junior SW Engineer” or “Graduate SW Engineer”. It’s normal for them to be promoted to “SW Engineer” after 2-3 years. Senior is harder to get obviously and depends on the person. Anything less than 5 years exp makes a joke of “senior” I think though

I had loads of genX friends in software. I’d say median job length for them was 3 years for at least the first 15 years of their careers.

Maybe part of the problem is "expecting" a promotion. Quite a few tweets use "expect."
