Shark belly-buttons heal! Skin denticles surround the 'scar', then as the skin heals over the denticles grow to crowd the space. Whether sharks are born in eggs (yolk-attached) or live (placental) they all have umbilical scars that heal. 🦈🦷#babyshark#skinteeth#sharkscience
I've come across A LOT of good 17th- and 18th-century Quaker names over the past 3.5 years, as I've worked on my thesis. Now that my thesis is done and submission is near, it's time to share the more than 90 wildest early Quaker names I've found (in alphabetical order):
I was lucky to be there when this gorgeous Red-tailed Racer decided to move down from its high resting place to eye level. With her skin stretched tight around her last meal, she seemed to struggle to get comfortable. Finally she rested her head on her full belly and settled.
UPDATE on John Greenfield’s recovery:
- Sounds pretty serious still
- He’s been transferred to the Chicagoland area.
- Here’s how you can send a card or schedule time to go see him. #bikechi
Lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) without its mane. After reproduction, they shrink in size, lose thousands of tentacles and become fantastic alien flowers.
Thrilling find off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida. Possibly a larval Caulophryne species of deep water Anglerfish, the adults of which are just crazy looking.
The ventral and dorsal aspects of a juvenile batfish (ogcocephalidae). These fishes are benthic and crawl along the bottom using their modified fins. They go through a pelagic larval stage before settling out onto the ocean floor.
This is what I would be doing on TV without writers.

The Dwarf Dory (Zenion hololepis) changes color based on the angle that light hits it. This is also the subject from which I posted a close up image, a couple of days back, asking if anyone recognized the colors. That angle really brought out the blues and greens.
It never occurred to me that the white fur of springbok is not simply hair that they raise, like in pronghorn, but rather a literal skin flap which opens up.
For over two decades, the "fairy lantern" plant Thismia kobensis, found in Hyogo Prefecture, was thought extinct. But now it’s being called a “Lazarus species” for its apparent return from the dead.
It is not every tour that you get lucky enough to see a wonderful White Wallaby or an incredible Eastern Quoll, but to see both at the same time, in the daylight, is truly remarkable.
Joanna Dale took this very special photograph on an Inala tour and was kind enough to share it.
🇯🇵🌳 In Japan if a tree interferes with the construction of a road for example, well they don't cut it, they dig around it, tie up its roots and move it elsewhere. Respect for Nature par excellence 🙏
One of my favorite images from a previous trip- a Hammerjaw (Omosudis lowii) after a meal consisting of a squid larger in size than than it is. Like so many deep water fishes, Hammerjaws have expandable stomachs and jaws that open to extraordinarily wide angles.
A lot of people are saying today that Dorval R Carter Jr should resign. As his Ventra card, I would like nothing more than to spend time with him again. But before that, I would like to tell a story about how he has quit working for
