People who think art *requires* suffering may or may not make great art, but they sure as hell will make everyone on their team suffer

A totally normal and healthy answer to the question "What are your thoughts about unionization in the gaming industry?" in the GDC State of the Game Industry survey

"It will destroy games. Making games is intrinsically hard. I've never seen it be easy. I'm not saying that it needs to be cruel, but if you aren't paying with blood, sweat, and tears, you probably aren't hitting your real ambitions. True genius has a price."

I spent the morning making an Unreal Engine Tips You Might Not Discover Quickly On Your Own video for all my Unity pals who are jumping ship. It's 20 whole minutes of just JUICY TIPS. It's still processing but I have to go eat so here it is

Does anyone know why TObjectPtr<> is recommended in UE5? Seems to just require numerous awkward workarounds for zero benefit

Just in case you need more proof that the “builders” in crypto are the lamest, dumbest people you know, they’re *excited* for this obviously bad idea named after a mechanic from World of Warcraft.

The future according to @VitalikButerin revolves around soulbound tokens (SBTs). SBTs are NFTs that can't be transferred after they are received. Once you receive an SBT, you hold it in a Soul wallet forever.

My browser is set to delete all logins & cookies routinely, block all 3rd party cookies and data. So before I log into yt it's about as default as you can get. And that default environment is where the algo is just screaming "hate this woman!". Which seems pretty off TBH

One of the things that really confused me when I came back to using Unreal was this note in their docs for Custom Expressions. "Using the custom node prevents constant folding and may use significantly more instructions than an equivalent version done with built in nodes!"
Using the custom node prevents constant folding and may use significantly more instructions than an equivalent version done with built in nodes! Constant folding is an optimization that UE4 employs under the hood to reduce shader instruction count when necessary. For example, an expression chain of Sin >Mul by parameter > Add to something can and will be collapsed by UE4 into a single instruction, the final add. This is possible because all of the inputs of that expression (parameter) are constant for the whole draw call, they do not change per-pixel. UE4 cannot collapse anything in a custom node, which can produce less efficient shaders than an equivalent version made out of existing nodes. As a result, it is best to only use the custom node when it gives you access to functionality not possible with the existing nodes.

Decided to try playing Root as a solo game vs 3 of the automated factions and it was pretty fun TBH. Nothing compared to playing with real people and a LOT of effort, but eh, it's tough to get a group together for Root and a PITA to teach new players

Anyone experienced with Jenkins & Perforce know how to force the workspace root to not be stupid? Currently it's insisting on checking out to C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Jenkins\.jenkins\workspace\{JOBNAME}\ With no options to configure that path

Me, an idiot, an absolute fool: Jenkins can't need much memory, it's just like a little web server. My old 8GB stick will be fine Java Runtime: I'll take 500MB please and thank you

None of the "Eclipta", "Plena", "Non-Baryonic Penumbrae", "thirteen-way-folded Dimensionates" nor the "Flux-dwelling Quantarchs" are mentioned anywhere else in this 534 page book From The Algebraist, Iain M Banks
Clouders were part of the cinctura, the collection of beings, species, machine strains and intelligent detritus that existed - generally - between stellar systems and didn't fit into any other neat category (so they weren't the deep space cometarians called the Eclipta, they weren't drifting examples of the Brown Dwarf Communitals known as the Plena, and they weren't the real exotics, the Non-Baryonic Penumbrae, the thirteen-way-folded Dimensionates or the Flux-dwelling Quantarchs).

I've seen a few people mention that watching today's video has brought up some difficult feelings about their own experiences at work. If that's you, it might be worth talking to :

Learning about abusive workplaces in gaming can bring up a lot of feelings. Maybe you currently work in, or have worked in spaces that sound similar to the stories that have come out today. You aren't alone. If you need someone to talk to please reach out: Text SUPPORT to 23368.
