Additionally, people with untreated mental illness are 16x more likely to be killed by cops. 25% of people murdered by police nationwide were experiencing an acute mental illness at the time. Link on why mental health professionals should be first responders instead of cops..

I’m glad you mentioned de-milirarizing the police! Another source I have proves that the more militarized a police force, the more violent towards citizens they become. The reason we need to defund is to divert the money towards other programs. In my city, we spend 352M on 1/

352M on the Criminal/Legal system, 10M on affordable housing, 8M on social services. Defunding the police means they’re no longer first-responders or militarized and taxpayer $$ can go directly towards helpful, safe community resources- without a tax increase. 2/

Additionally- it’s important to note that historically, police “reform” hasn’t worked! Did you know that neither implicit-bias training nor body cams have been shown to reduce crime or reduce violence from police towards non-police people? https://www.pnas.org/content/116/21/10329.short?rss=1 …

Lastly, the entire policing system was built upon the idea of keeping the poor/working class from making waves politically and encouraging them to be productive for the wealthy elite, while cops protected the property/interests of the wealthy (white/male) elite. 4/

The entire system is biased/bigoted. Most people who have a “defund” or “abolish” stance believe you cannot reform a fundamentally bigoted system to be safe/productive for all citizens. Anyway, rant over! Thanks so much for listening! 5/5
