The difficulty of this kind of reporting is inconceivable to most of us in the UNC community. It takes hours of work for almost no compensation and, compared to much other student work on campus, little comfort. But it breaths life into the mottos of both campus & state 1/2

This is a wild story. Am I understanding it correctly -- these UNC system governors essentially made a payment to the Sons of Confederate Veterans that enabled the Silent Sam lawsuit?

That is my reading of the story. A timeline or FAQ w/ annotated
@documentcloud would be a really helpful feature. The story is at a point of complexity that makes it easy for partisans to misconstrue and for readers to lose focus.

One thing I don’t get — why did SCV need the money to buy the statue? Why not just pay them later with the booty from the predetermined lawsuit against UNC?

They're a small (and shrinking) organization, and they don't have a lot of money
