and if you lose the original application, or if it gets automatically updated to a new version that is broken, it doesn't matter -- you still have the exact version of the application that you need to edit the file, perfectly preserved

That’s actually how TiddlyWiki works (it saves itself as an HTML file that includes the app JS plus the data in JSON)

It's called an object. This is why serializing Smalltalk objects works, whereas serializing Java objects does not. Code is part of the data - never separate an instance from its class.
