Yeah, same situation. Except it wasn't dilution -- both SQL and CSS turned out to be crappy compromises that weren't good for devleopers *or* end-users. They were also bad on the software end -- hard for databases/browsers to interpret. They weren't great for anybody, in fact.

In the sense of job specialization, I think it's fair to say yes, that's what happened -- the average person doesn't know how to write a database query, and arguably SQL has become more complex and less appropriate for that to serve its specialized users.

But i think they achieved their goal: a significant number of database queries are being written by what we would otherwise consider non-programmers.
