And "modern" apps now package their files & folders into a single zip file, just with a different extension that intentionally hides the file & folder metaphor, like *.app.

I agree with this on the os level. I almost wish I had no folders on my mac. But end user hierarchical filesystems seem to have stuck around in ‘knowledge bases’ like Notion or Paper. Notion’s concept of documents as folders is a nice update.
