But first: what is Anki? It's a so-called Spaced Repetition System (SRS). Or in simpler terms: a flashcard app. If you want to remember anything long-term, you must review it often. But when? That's what Anki figures out for you.

What makes Anki so great? After all, it's not the most innovative, not the best looking, and definitely not the only flashcard/SRS app out there. Anki is great because it's: • Free • Fast • Flexible • Friendly Let's have a look at each reason:

Anki is free. Hundreds of thousands of people from all economic backgrounds use Anki every day. They learn new skills that change their lives. These learners pay it forward. Because Anki is free and open source, there are 1100+ free plugins and even more flashcard collections!

Anki is fast. You can add tens of thousands of cards with pictures and audio, and Anki will still load almost instantly. Not even its (free) sync service will slow you down! This makes it suitable for any hardware—even old smartphones.

Anki is flexible. Its plugins make Anki the perfect tool for any learner. You can shape the app to your taste and even add a splash of HTML and CSS to your flashcards. But also the less adventurous can shape their cards by creating fields for their specific way of learning.

Finally, Anki is friendly. The fact that it's free, fast, and flexible makes it the perfect tool to enable tinkerers to build and share. With a global community of learners, it's no wonder it's among the friendliest and most freely giving communities on the web.

I have three fields for my language learning cards: Front (two fields): Audio and target language (i.e. Italian or Spanish) Back (one field): Translation and notes For programming cards I just have one field each side (question and answer).

Flashcards are power tools for learning languages fast and without studying. But most overcomplicate the process. These 3 types of flashcards will make you absorb vocab and grammar in no time: 1) Sentence + audio 2) Cloze + audio 3) Audio only Learn how to use them 🧵👇
