When it’s warlords and the men who’ve dominated Afghanistan’s political landscape for decades negotiating over the spoils of their war-ravaged country, you know you’ve got a problem. Some thoughts from me on this compromised peace process https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-03-27/afghanistan-is-on-the-verge-of-a-peace-deal-that-could-imperil-women-s-rights … via @bopinion

There's more at stake here than the withdrawal of U.S. troops. For peace to have any chance of success, citizens from all parts of society must be involved, says @ShaharzadAkbar, the chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.pic.twitter.com/gO8WL0SNUY

Afghanistan has one of the youngest and fastest growing populations in the world - around 63% are below 25 years - and it's these people who will have to live with, and implement, whatever is ultimately negotiated.

And what about transitional justice, or truth and reconciliation in a nation where *everyone* is a victim of this decades-long war? The international community views these issues as "too destabilizing," Akbar says.

Why can't they have both? Because oppression of women is baked into Taliban / Warlord culture in Afghanistan. As is true BTW of all Abrahamic religions' culture.
