What, in the US, we are currently calling a debate between 'capitalism' and 'socialism' is really a debate between different types of a selectively regulated market economy -- so let's stop overloading a sensible conversation?

Yep, if you are for the concept of private ownership it’s called capitalism, even heavily regulated. :)

By that definition even the DSA is capitalist (which I think, after a fashion, it is!)

I think that people in usa just want more free stuff, and then they call that for some reason socialism but should call it bigger welfare state. socialism as more social programs, not shares ownership/responsibility, righf?

Except that SOME shared ownership makes sense. Healthcare, water, electricity, education are rationed when run by firms whose 1st interest is profit
