My first talk in 2020 will be for Tedx in my home country, Romania. I haven't done a Ted talk before, and I think it's the right place to discuss about the age of Digital Identity, what we're facing, and how we can build better systems to protect our privacy.

TL;DR: TeamViewer stored user passwords encrypted with AES-128-CBC with the key of 0602000000a400005253413100040000 and iv of 0100010067244F436E6762F25EA8D704 in the Windows registry. If the password is reused anywhere, privilege escalation is possible.

Great thread. One thing I worry about in the disinfo discourse is when ppl argue that we should centralize more power to elite voices/platforms/sources of knowledge “to stop disinfo.” Speaks to an inherent distrust of public knowledge and lack of faith in democratic discourse.

I'm learning more about the healthcare situation in China from my friend than from the media. (She works as an online English teacher with Chinese students of all ages). Seriously, what the bloody hell happened to journalism? 😑

5/A4 A really critical benefit of taking a firm ethical stance for building technology is in talent acquisition & retention: A 2019 study by showed technologists in general & data scientists in particular are adamant about working for responsible employers.

3/A3 At the end of the day most ethical issues aren’t born of malice but carelessness: lack of oversight, lack of diversity of thought in design, lack of accountability mechanisms, lack of deliberation time for uncovering & addressing risks.

Yes, this. You've articulated the "debate" really well. I think the answer is definitely a bit of both but we have to be careful to not equate "ethics" with "legally permissible," whether "legal" literally relates to the law or company values.

2/A2: And by "everyone," I really do mean * everyone. * Participatory design practices such as can ensure that harms are minimized. But it's on us, the makers, to invite everyone to the table and give them an empowered voice.

6/A2 Heavily regulated industries like insurance, health, banking, utilities, etc. all have very well-established frameworks, usually enshrined in law or sometimes in industry best practice, for assessing risk & setting out the right or expected way of doing things.

1/A2 This is such an important question right now because there’s really no consensus yet in businesses: does it belong in Ethics & Compliance? Typically great on legal matters but not yet up to speed with technological concerns.

Facebook's version of privacy is "We'll show you who's invading your privacy, and milking your data, and we'll do nothing about it. You can manually opt out though. Have fun, zuckers!" 🤣 🤣 🤣 , you'll "love" this as much as I do.
