The number of Urbit chats I'm in has gone from 4 to 12 this month. ~500 new messages every day. Number go up.

5/ while the internet is an open network, it's captive to a handful of corporations who extract a disproportionate amount of value through their market share and control.

Most misunderstanding of Clay is because we call it a filesystem, Gall because we call them apps, and Arvo because we call it an OS. None of these are wrong, but it's really hard to design them right with names so full of irrelevant connotations.

One of the minor conveniences of having an planet is that I essentially have a 100% unique human-readable identifier that I can use for usernames on whatever service requires it.

The services we all use today each feel like one place. It’s as if everyone on MEGANET is living together in the same city. In the real world, cities have their own cultures. So we thought: there must be some way to build more granular communities online.

This model provides for unending possible combinations for ordinary users, without increasing complexity for developers. It’s clear to us what this can look like in the short term. What the zoomers will do with it is beyond our imagination.

Landscape is the Urbit web interface, and it's the best way to interact with your ship. Chrome and Brave are the recommended browsers for using Landscape.

Run the command below, except with sampel-palnet replaced by the name of your Urbit identity, and path/to/my-planet.key replaced with the path to your keyfile: ./urbit -w sampel-palnet -k path/to/my-planet.key

Urbit is not yet ready for everyday users — but if you're technically inclined or generally intrepid, feel free to try it out. It's a good place to explore.

Yeah. In Urbit, inputs and outputs are all typed (nor is the type always String). No stdin or stdout; a program (the kernel, a kernel module, or an app) is a functional event handler. It gets an event as an input to the function and outputs its new state and a list of effects.

A strongly-typed language (that is good) would help a lot. But I think the next step is to stop doing this unix model of processes inputting and outputting strings.

Shell scripting is important. It doesn't have to suck. Urbit's 'dojo' shell language is a superset of Hoon. It's not based on strings; it uses strongly typed expressions and pure-functional scripts, whose outputs can be printed, stored in the REPL, or piped to apps or the kernel.

  15. Your planet is not just a personal server; it could be the root node of your personal cluster. One moon is a media server, one manages your work-related computing, one has personal projects. One for each social group you're in, and three store backups in GCP, AWS, and Azure.

... it became clear to me that Hoon is even simpler and thinner layer over Nock than I anticipated. My speculations were moot because "that wouldn't be a trivial piece of nock".
