The "fake snow" videos from 2014 were exhaustively debunked. I myself wrote one for Skeptoid. Yet here we are again, with the same hoax distributed with new tools. Wishful thinking and ignorance of basic science will always trump fact checking.

I watched two videos on TikTok by a mom with her very young daughter. The first video showed her holding a lighter to snow and saying how it “proves” it’s fake because she interpreted the black soot from the lighter as burning of alleged non-snow. She was gleeful about it. 1/x

These videos blow my mind. They've become popular among German conspiracists (again) lately as well, and my initial reaction was "Germany's discovering early 2000s American conspiracy tropes". But then, the current wave of conspiracy thinking incorporates everything, everywhere.

I agree it's not necessarily QAnon believers who think the snow is fake, but the mindset is the same. These are people who believe the government is out to get them-starts with fake snow➡️ antivax, anti mask, big pharma, pedophile rings, etc.
