Contra Sen. Cotton, slavery was neither a "necessary" evil nor destined for "ultimate extinction." Slavery was a choice defended or accepted by most white Americans for generations, and it expanded dramatically between the Revolution and the Civil War.https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2020/jul/26/bill-by-cotton-targets-curriculum-on-slavery/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter_ArkansasOnline …

The whiggish take on America's history with slavery just doesn't stand up even to casual scrutiny, no matter how many times people offer it and no matter how badly people want to believe it.

Also worth noting that Cotton explicitly says here that "the union was built" on slavery. Which is precisely what the #1619Project and a fair amount of recent historiography argues.

Cotton started his entirely ignorant attack arguing the opposite. He’s boxed himself into a corner, punching his own face at this point.

Fascinating. As a conservative, how does he feel about depriving people of their freedom and their inalienable rights? I thought conservatives thought you should have the right to negotiate a fair wage?

The Union was built on the compromise with slavery. Deliberately misinterpreting him (even if his verbiage leaves you an opening) is unbecoming of a serious person.

I guess Cotton's objection isn't to slavery, capitalism, and the American republic being inseparably intertwined. I suppose his objection was to 1619's suggestion that this was a bad thing. Maybe he's gearing up for "Cotton 2024: Because Slavery Was a Positive Good"?

Cotton wanted unmarked forces to take down African-American protesters. He supports a white nationalist Administration. The math on this is pretty easy.
