The author suggests a proposed "compromise" allowing slavery to exist until 1900 might have been preferable to finishing the Civil War and ending it in 1865. Say what you will about John Brown, but he thought what the enslaved preferred mattered more.https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/19th-century-radical-chic-the-transcendentalists-love-affair-with-john-brown/ …

I would put John Brown alongside Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass as the three greatest American men of the 19th Century. But maybe that's just me.

Bovard neglects the connections that fused Transcendentalists like T&E, John Brown, and the Republican Party. Thoreau’ concluded, “he has advertised me there is such a thing as [honorable] death.” Please read _When It Was Grand_ for a more reverent interpretation.

The Pottawatomie massacre is problematic at best. Hacking people to death, including a man and two of his sons in earshot of his wife and youngest son, should give us pause.
