Sigh, @thurrott et al that want TouchID on Macs *completely* miss the point of TouchID, which is to permit longer, stronger passcodes.

@mjtsai To secure it, it needs hardware support (like TPM or something) and the reader MUST physically be near the motherboard, not on a kb. - View other replies

@mjtsai That is, it must have a way to verify a fingerprint in a way that the OS *never* sees the print. -
@mjtsai And the OS would need access to extremely secure memory to store the full decryption key (as TouchID does with the Secure Enclave)

@mjtsai Although I disagree with speed, given muscle memory can work with a physical keyboard in a way it can't on touch.
