@rosyna Sure, but it’s still easier/faster than typing a long password.
Sigh, @thurrott et al that want TouchID on Macs *completely* miss the point of TouchID, which is to permit longer, stronger passcodes.

@mjtsai But the way PCs use fingerprints is not secure in the least. - View other replies

@rosyna I thought you were saying that there would be no benefit to it on the Mac. Couldn’t Apple make it secure? -
@mjtsai When thurrott et al say it, they mean the current PC way -
@mjtsai To secure it, it needs hardware support (like TPM or something) and the reader MUST physically be near the motherboard, not on a kb. - View other replies

@mjtsai That is, it must have a way to verify a fingerprint in a way that the OS *never* sees the print. -
@mjtsai And the OS would need access to extremely secure memory to store the full decryption key (as TouchID does with the Secure Enclave)

Desktop computers/laptops are usually used in situations in which typing a long-ass password doesn't compromise security.

@rosyna It’s a good convenience though. My BF’s got a VAIO laptop with a fingerprint reader, I’d love to have Touch ID on a Mac. -
@latteine The problem with most other biometric authentication types, they replace the password. This *severely* reduces security.
