      @aral It does not phish any passwords. It uses the standard OS X authorization APIs with a custom prompt https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Security/Reference/authorization_ref/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/constant_group/Name_Tags …

      It's easy to prove Dropbox is using a standard OS X authorization dialog by sampling the process when showing. @aralpic.twitter.com/RSM1jhNv09

      If you look at the documentation for AuthorizationCopyRights(), it shows you can change the prompt and icon. @aral https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Security/Reference/authorization_ref/#//apple_ref/c/func/AuthorizationCopyRights …

      AuthorizationCopyRights() blocks all threads in the caller and then uses IPC (XPC) to call out to SecurityAgent to show the dialog. @aral

      So that's: Show password dialog Open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor Double-click Dropbox Click "Sample" Find thread… @aral

      If you want to force the Authorization dialog to appear again: quit Dropbox, delete /Library/DropboxHelperTools/, relaunch Dropbox @aral

      The thing to be worried about is that Dropbox now installs a kernel extension (kext)… https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/KernelProgramming/Extend/Extend.html …

      Hmm, Dropbox needs to update their uninstall instructions to include a note on how to uninstall their kext…https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/41

      If you have it installed (not all do), the kext is at /Library/Extensions/Dropbox.kext

      Dropbox could have saved a lot of pain had they just made a first-run dialog that asks if they want to enable certain features…

          @rosyna is Dropbox pushing it to old Dropbox installs?

          @co60ca the setuid bit they set on their privileged helper tools allows them to install new things, like the kext, without asking again.

          @rosyna and they are installing the kext without asking?

          @co60ca I haven't seen it myself, but others say yes. (I'd need an existing install, which I removed to confirm the auth dialog was real)

          @co60ca You'd need to have Dropbox installed. Then open the menu bar item, make sure it's up to date. You can also use kextstat.

          @rosyna its running and syncing frequently. Last time I used it for a few hours was Friday if they changed it recently.

          @co60ca I'm also wondering if they're A/B testing the feature. Look at http://Dropbox.app/Contents/Resources/Dropbox-stable.kext.tgz … ?
