Which *public* OS X APIs are still restricted to Mac App Store apps? GameKit, iCloud/CloudKit, Remote Push Notifications, what else?

@rosyna how do they even enforce that? sorry if its a dumb question. -
@bizzyunderscore It's enforced via XPC services and entitlements. A separate process does the actual work on behalf of the API. - View other replies
-
@bizzyunderscore That XPC service, running in a sandbox, will refuse connections from apps without proper entitlements. -
@bizzyunderscore Sure, there are ways around it, but that requires modifying system files. Not something you can expect a user to do.

@danielpunkass@rosyna Yeah. One can only hope for iCloud too, eh? - View other replies

@nikf@danielpunkass Maybe iCloud will come one day if Apple finds a way to secure it against arbitrary applications.

-
@rosyna@danielpunkass I wonder if that's 10.11 specific? All old OS too? -
@vexed@danielpunkass Likely 10.11 specific as it requires changes to the MapKit entitlement system (sandboxing) unlikely to be backported.

@rosyna Holy cow! What's next, iCloud for non-App Store apps? Non sandboxed apps in the store? Haha…who am I kidding—only Apple gets those! - View other replies

@rgriff I do understand restrictions on iCloud (arbitrary apps are harder to secure… for the moment) but never on any other APIs!

@rosyna That’s awesome! -

@fzwob RT@rosyna: “MapKit APIs can now be used […] in apps that are distributed outside of the App Store.” YAY! https://developer.apple.com/library/prerelease/mac/releasenotes/General/rn-osx-10.11/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40016209 … -
@martinwinter woohoo! Maybe a little late for us, but that’s great news. Thanks for letting me know! -
@fzwob Yep! Glad to be of service. I immediately thought of you. Hope everything is well … Good night! -
@martinwinter everything is great! Hope same for you. And it’s really bedtime now, you’re right :) -
@fzwob Yes, it is, thanks!

@rosyna@danielpunkass Wow, that’s big news! I hope for a few more things in the future!
