I have often wondered to what extent social media discourse at election times (buzzers, cebong & kampret etc) makes Indonesians perceive that political polarisation is greater than it really is. newmandala.org/the-polarisati

Seems a correlation btwn govt popularity and 'trust' in m’stream media. E.g. independent media Rappler+ABS-CBN distrusted as Duterte/BBM popular in PH. Pro-govt TV3+Utusan not trusted as Malaysian govt unpopular. How much can we 'trust' the 'trust' figures then? 🙂

In TV news, there is little correlation between trust and most watched. E.g TVOne + Metro (Indonesia) and TV3 (Malaysia) by far the most watched yet low scores in trust. Lack of decent alternative? TV as ‘background noise’ but not taken seriously?

Print media plummeting in the last 5 yrs even more than expected. 45% to 17% in Malaysia, 53% to 23% in Singapore. Biggest leap is TikTok (now 15% in PH), + used by 45% of 18-24 yr-olds in Indonesia.

Ha quite the comparison. And if Australians thought that Indonesian public diplomacy video was impressively dramatic, wait til they watch a sinetron

It's been a strong start on the world stage for the new Prime Minister - but we think there is some room for diplomatic improvement.
Compare the video Australia prepared to welcome Jacinda Ardern to Australia, with the Indonesian President Joko Widodo's efforts #Insiders

It was terrific. And hopefully the 'rebuild' includes the actual-death (and decaying) experience of many Indonesian language programs around the country.

ACICIS was delighted to be mentioned from the podium by the Australian Prime Minster, Anthony Albanese @AlboMP, yesterday. It is extremely validating – particularly after the organisational near-death experience of the pandemic.
