I'm assuming that there is a special place in hell for people who design the format of online portals for grant applications. There is simply no cosmic justice, otherwise.

If you think this is a subtweet about you because you haven't gotten a flu shot, it is now!!!! Go get your stinkin' shot.

I'm consistently amazed how many people I know—scientists, who work in a HOSPITAL—think they don't need to get a flu shot because they've "never had the flu." This is a gross misunderstanding of why you should get a vaccine. It takes 15 minutes, people. Just do it.

Unless of course your PI is forcing you to apply as a sort of cash grab in which case might I recommend the following course of action for them:

I ask because McGill's policies on this are "your PI can do whatever they want" (😒) and I'm genuinely confused why anyone would even bother applying for awards less than the amount of their stipend if their take-home wasn't going to go up.

An example: your base salary is $20k and you get a $15k award. Did you end up taking home $35k or was it still $20k and your department / PI just had to contribute less?

Question for current/former grad students: if you had a minimum required grad stipend from your department (or PI) and received an award or fellowship, was that award in addition to or instead of your stipend? Did your department have any explicit rules about handling that?

And I'm *very* lucky! I have lots of support I can fall back on, and a credit card from the US with a good limit (my Canadian limit is $1k, which covers remarkably little). The academic reimbursement system *needs* to change; it's untenable for all but the most well-off.

I'm currently waiting for >$1600 in reimbursements for a trip I took in November. Those charges have since accrued over $50 in interest on my credit card that I won't get back. (That's about one whole week of groceries, for those keeping score 🙃)

The Mandoline Incident™ was worse than initially believed. Doctors have been consulted. Doctors made unfortunate grimacing faces. Ross is to monitor his finger health diligently for 24-48 hours. Apparently, significant blood loss in a finger is *bad*! (Who knew? 🤷‍♂️)

In Ross versus the kitchen mandoline, I'm batting 0 for 1. In news that will surprise absolutely no one, mandolines will happily slice fingertips in addition to vegetables. ☝️ + 🔪 = 🤦‍♂️

Is *every* PhD program like that Star Trek episode where all the adults have died and the half-feral orphaned children manage to cobble together a semi-functional society as they desperately try to take care of themselves and each other?
