    The writing’s on the wall here for the entire common law practise of caselaw naming. Tbh, not sure how I feel about this. I see the argument against using people’s names like a legal shorthand (Gary Doyle Order for eg) but... I guess I’m very used to the way it is.

    Yep. I remember someone on here doing a quick search through newspaper archives and sure enough the ol' rural crimewave story started appearing and getting louder, regular as clockwork, six months out from every election over the last twenty years.

    There's a grim feedback loop here too: allocating resources to surveillance schemes combined with the belief that they are a magic fix for crime leads to less actual police, which means less crime prevention, which leads to more calls for magic surveillance solutions. 🙄

    The Data Protection Commissioner is auditing use of public CCTV and has published a draft list of activities requiring a DPIA which strongly indicates concerns about CCTV. Fianna Fáil: cut “red tape”, more CCTV. Criminals are “navigating” the red tape (what?).

    . & James Reilly said when Ireland was trying to implement its own plain packaging laws in 2014 that the argument to wait until the WTO ruled was wrong-headed. While appeal is likely, it seems now they were right. Bonus Mark 2014 Hair Archive:

    WTO just threw out a complaint saying legally requiring health warnings on cigarettes in Oz unjustifiably infringe trademark rights. T'was a key argument used by lobbyists in Ireland when James Reilly followed suit as health minister. They said Ireland would be sued for billions.
