I know this has been pointed out many times but man Pete Davidson is the guy you made out with on an old couch in the basement at a house party when you were 18 and wasted, the vibe is just so strong

Absolutely thrilled to be making my @SAVEURMAG debut with a piece that is very dear and near to my heart. If you remember dancing to YMCA in Lima's Hard Rock Cafe in 99, make some noise! saveur.com/culture/americ

today's salad: mixed greens, Aldi grilled chicken strips, Ina Garten's herb dip thinned to a dressing consistency, white cheddar, Granny Smith apple, chopped up cheddar-jalapeño scone made by a friend because I need a crouton of some sort to feel whole

[I'm going jackass mode sorry] like do people have no interests prior to having kids, or no interests that can be adapted to kids, and have to fill their time with things that stress them out? like you know parks are great?

like yes having a kid changes how you do things because well duh and some activities are more kid-adaptable than others (I am glad I like going to the library), but the whole "do unnecessary things you've never done before and don't want to do" vibe is very weird and regressive.

like if you like that stuff, cool! do it. I like books and bike riding and exploring Chicago so we do kid-adjusted versions of that. if my kid wanted to do something else, that's also okay. but I'm not leading with something I don't want to do? why would I do that?

also who would sign on for this job: "You will do things you don't like and don't need to do for free, and feel terrible if you don't do them." notice I said don't need to do. you do need to feed, clothe, and educate your kids because duh that is love and caretaking.

but like. having a kid is exhausting just doing the baseline things. I cannot imagine getting more stressed out because we didn't decorate the Hanukkah bush a week after Thanksgiving.

sometimes I feel some guilt that I'm not wealthy and can't get my kid the absolute best of everything, which feels normal. but I know she has a good life (and capitalism is a scourge).

you're better when you're doing things you actually enjoy, why would you want to do things that make you stressed out or miserable? the mom police aren't going to come arrest you for not making wreaths, I promise.

it seems like it should go without saying but: being a mom doesn't have to mean doing tons of things you don't want to do or feeling guilty that you don't do them? like parenthood is hard enough without feeling bad you didn't do a holiday craft. literally no one cares.
