The hierarchy is no longer 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5. The hierarchy is now tenure track, full-time non-tenure-track, adjunct.

I say this as soon who lucked out last year: folks are hustling for ANY academic teaching job they can get that provides benefits.

I think about this every time I’m on a search committee. You see very quickly that the quality and depth of super talented and hard working people is huge. And that’s good. But it’s also part of the possibility conditions that mean exploitative jobs can be created & maintained.

It's so true and so sad/demoralizing to see the brilliant scholar-teachers out there who can't get hired. Our universities, programs, and students lose out!

Indeed, my "little" TT job, not in a traditional department, that I was lucky enough to land had 101 applicants when they stopped counting.

I'm still waiting for the day senior faculty will use their voice and power to eliminate the category of adjuncts. Temporary positions should be filled by paying VAPs, not by paying $2200course/semester to newly-minted ph.d's and send them to apply for food stamps.

I cannot say that my experience is universal, but when senior faculty tried to do something at my institution the administration just said no. Finally, the dept got to convert some adjunct jobs to fulltime temp instructor position on a salary/benefits with 3 yr term.
