Translate things into "physical" quantities like energy consumption and human population, zoom out, and get macro trends. How has energy consumption per person changed over time? Where have we had the biggest efficiency increases?

Overall, per capita energy consumption has increased a lot over history (which is good). As I recall, in recent decades, more developed countries are leveling off or declining as we get more efficient (also good)

how would we distinguish leveling off because we're getting more energy-efficient from leveling off because we're doing less of the things that cost energy?

You can look at stats like GDP per unit energy. The inverse of this is called “energy intensity” and it's addressed on that same page, intensity is decreasing (meaning efficiency is increasing):pic.twitter.com/a2S8V9SjsR
