Turned out my locale was messed up and the earlier version was for en-GB, while the latter for en-US (thanks @tehjh!). This brings a Q: should vendors be expected to maintain unique naming for the binaries they publish to allow easy verification and auditability?https://twitter.com/rootkovska/status/1053750206876008448 …

Is it expected that the Thunderbird's installer binary for the _same_ version changes over time? Here are the hashes of two downloads made this month: /cc @mozthunderbird pic.twitter.com/Vh0kE1uZxb

FWIW, depending on the OS, files are potentially marked with their source URL - e.g. if I download a file in Chrome on Linux, it is marked according to https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/CommonExtendedAttributes/ … (see image). https://superuser.com/questions/695507/find-out-where-a-file-was-downloaded-from … talks about equivalent functionality on OS X and Windows.pic.twitter.com/rPxKO2c9db

(but of course that stops working if a file has been copied around in a way that doesn't preserve such attributes)

Yeah, also not very compatible with `gpg --verify`. But perhaps no one verifies binaries manually anyway... Perhaps a (cross-OS) standard for signed metadata for distributable binaries would make sense? (author ID, URL, timestamp, sig(s))

Let's start with easy things: not posting hashes as images.
