THREAD: The problem with discussing #antisemitism is that, in the mind of the general public, there is a 2000-year blank between the death of Jesus and the Holocaust. Non-Jews tend to think of Jews as a mere prefix to Christianity.

So I will ask the same question here: Which Jews can you name who made positive contributions to society? I will start with Commodore Uriah Levy, the Jewish officer responsible for ending flogging in the US Navy:https://www.haaretz.com/jewish/.premium-1862-officer-who-killed-flogging-is-born-1.5235252 …

Sigmund Freud and J.Robert Oppenheimer. And I am sad to say that's the only two that come to mind immediately . So I now have a bit of studying to do. 🤔

Both of whom are 20th century, but can still count as pre-Holocaust since they were active before the rise of Hitler. Freud fled the Nazis in to England in 1938.

I'm enjoying it, too. I plan to keep adding links as I find them. One problem us that the public tends to think of Jews as a religion only, but it is a culture as well.

Having had a curiosity as to why my Nana hid the fact that her mother was Jewish and raised her Jewish as well, led me to a lot of answers. And a lot more questions. I think people try to shield their children from things that are unpleasant. As does the education system.

Sadly, a lot of Jews of that generation thought that if they hid their Jewish heritage, their children would have a better life. But living in the closet takes its toll on the soul. Now a lot of their descendants are rediscovering their ancestors.

This is a bit of a cheat because she's distant family, but on the contribution to arts and pop culture front, Ziegfeld Follies comic actress Nora Bayes co-wrote the standard "Shine On, Harvest Moon" and gave Jack Benny one of his early breaks.

As far as the history of antisemitism between jesus and the holocaust I do know a bit more. I was blessed with a mother whose favorite phrase was "look it up,and then we'll discuss" when I had a question as a child. I had lots of questions! 😆
