THREAD: The problem with discussing #antisemitism is that, in the mind of the general public, there is a 2000-year blank between the death of Jesus and the Holocaust. Non-Jews tend to think of Jews as a mere prefix to Christianity.

Once Jesus comes, Jews disappear from the history books. So much so, that in the 1950s my grade school class learned that Albert Einstein was a "German scientist." No mention of *why* he fled Hitler: He w as Jewish.

I have many times asked a non-Jewish audience: Can you name 10 Jewish poets, writers, scientists, philisophers, etc. who lived *between* Jesus and the Holocaust? " Most of the time the question results draw an ocean of blank faces.

So I will ask the same question here: Which Jews can you name who made positive contributions to society? If Jews are Middle Eastern people, why are so many Jewish surnames European-sounding? Because European govts forced Jews take such names. This thread by @bentev28 explains this history: https://twitter.com/bentev28/status/1080349657643925504?s=20 …

Irving Berlin (1888-1989) wrote over 1500 songs, including "God Bless America," written in 1818 and first performed in 1938. White supremacists objected to singing it because he was a Jew. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irving_Berlin …

Many of the "heretics" killed by the Inquisition were Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism but still secretly practiced Judaism. Many #conspiracytheories about Jews date from this period of suspicion and persecution.https://www.history.com/topics/religion/inquisition …

Although we think of the Inquisition as a European phenomenon, it was active in Mexico also. By the time it was abolished in 1821(that late!) approx 100 Mexican Jews has been killed and hundreds imprisoned.http://www.aish.com/jw/s/Surprising-Facts-about-the-Jews-of-Mexico.html?mobile=yes …

The pirate Jean Lafitte was a Sephardi Jew, whose maternal grandfather was burned at the stake by the Inquisition - which influenced his decision to fight for the Americans as a privateer. He was no Zaddik, interesting all the same. http://jewishmaritime.blogspot.com/2009/09/jewish-pirate-jean-lafitte.html …
