At what point will reporters use the appropriate word for what #DonaldTrump does daily. It is not utter falsehoods. It is not misspeak. It is lie. Perhaps those among our best and brightest will do what is necessary. #LieIsLieIsLieIsLieIsLie @jaketapper @maddow @LeonardPittsJr1https://twitter.com/maggieNYT/status/1000405829928083456 …

Trump told two demonstrable falsehoods this AM, one about his administration’s policy of separating undocumented immigrant kids inclu infants from their parents, which he tried to claim wasn’t his own policy. The other was falsely claiming his own aide didn’t give a bg briefing.

Definition of a lie is *knowingly* telling a falsehood. Reporters, even great ones, can’t always prove intent. Words matter. Journalists should use them correctly.

I agree. So when he tells a lie, we should say he's telling a lie. When he says something different than something he said before, we should say that. But most of the time, the best we can say is: Donald Trump said something that is not true. I'd settle for that.

How about just reporting what is said? But that would assume public is intelligent enough to decide, and doesn’t need your superior moral wisdom.

It is not moral wisdom to report when something a public official ays is not true. It is responsible journalism. A fellow journalist reminds that it cannot be called a lie without intent. But constant untruths deserve attention - and reporting.

Falsehood, false statements, lie. All the same meaning. NYT , et. al. will never go full Richard Pryor and call Trump "A LYING MF!" We can give that dream up.
