Gave my blog a little upgrade, so you can now find it at the much-easier-to-remember (AND you can also now easily subscribe to updates via email, if that’s something you’d like)

jfc this is the kind of opening passage that makes the part of me that has wanted to try writing fiction decide instead to place my laptop on a barge and light the entire thing on fire as it drifts out to sea

1/ recently started a blog focused on close reading of favourite passages from romance novels. In her latest post she explores an excerpt from A Duke In Disguise by Cat Sebastian.

Seconded! Felicia’s newsletter is my absolute fave every week. Etymology AND romance novels AND French lit, it’s basically everything I love and didn’t necessarily know could go together

A10/ Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall. Perfect example of how much you can find (big emotions, complex backstory, gorgeous extended metaphors) in very few pages.

A8/ Novella vs. longer romance is mostly a mood thing for me, but as someone who loves high HIGH angst, that can be easier to find in longer romances. More time to make them suffer!

A7/ Trying to do too much, so the story feels rushed. I think smaller scale is almost always better for me in a novella

Katrina Jackson's Layover manages to fit an incredible, nuanced sibling relationship in a single scene: it's incredible what can be done in just a bit of on-page interaction

A6/ I do still like to know that MCs have a support system, other people and complex relationships in their life. I still want good secondary characters!
