Not all mosaicists were experts. Romulus (founder of Rome) and his twin brother Remus suckling on a happy she-wolf, mosaic from Aldborough, in Leeds City Museum, UK. This mosaic always makes me smile!

Roman terracotta dish with barbotine decoration ~ late C2nd CE This is a beautiful example of Gaulish red slip ware. Birds march around the sides interspersed with leaves. The high sheen finish draws attention to the terra sigillata style.

The figure of the Satyr is in that trim style of the early Classical period, but the posing of the figure, with gaze fixed forwards and weight shifting backwards, is rather innovative.
