My theory makes short work of the Mary's Room thought experiment. When Mary sees red for the first time, she doesn't learn any new fact, but she gets to *be* a physical system experiencing Red. The difference between knowledge of redness and redness is indexical.

To some extent the computational processes in one person's head at one time and another's at another time are identical. Then they can apply the you=S condition and be sure about the experience. This is confusing for us because of our sense of individual identity though.

Different humans are biologically different organisms but computationally the same; we all have almost the same POVself. Thus it makes sense to make a deal with all sufficiently similar computational processes to treat each other well. But that's really all it is - a deal.

A system S only has a truth value about whether it is really experiencing qualia Q if you=S. This is even true for past and future versions of you, since they are different physical systems.

Or whether physical system S "really sees red", "really experiences pleasure", etc. These objective facts about subjective existence just don't exist. The problem then is how to explain your own experiences, how to deal with other humans' experience-claims, etc.

I think I have a solution to the hard problem of consciousness. Not sure how original it is. I will call it "Qualia Relativity" The reason we can't seem to solve the hard problem is because we set up an observer-independent fact about whether physical system S "is conscious".

The graph of Tesla's stock must be horrifying to any who is short. Anyone who is long just made 2-3x their money, possibly more.

I nominate this tweet by as pretty much the most apt and pithy summary of the 2010s and likely the 2020s as well.

Which world would you rather live in (In US/W Europe): 1950s social "technology" (social norms, roles, expectaions, traditions) + 2020 material technology OR 2020s social technology + 1950s material technology

I don't know if somebody coined this already but the rule seem to be: "The majority of the above-sustenance-resources will be always used to wage zero-sum status wars" Although in the general case it's still better to live in a high GDP p/c country, just not by the % difference

Others are healthcare (US especially) and education. +-10% of GDP per cap - about 5 years' growth - is basically irrelevant in practice but in discussions people think of it as being a big deal.

When I hear "X would reduce GDP" as an argument against X, I'm increasingly skeptical. GDP per cap in the west doesn't matter, because we spend most of our money on things like houses/rent whose prices track GDP perfectly. Our world is just kind of broken on this issue.

Our culture here in the west has started to worship nature, probably as we search for a replacement for Christianity. Global warming is seen as a sin against Gaia and carries a special taboo. Real x-risks like AI and bio are less legible, and we have got used to nuclear.

There are gonna to be real existential risks emerging in the next decades -- like synthetic-bio weapons designed by military AGIs -- let's hope they're not ignored due to "boy who cried wolf" phenomena triggered by fallacious worrying about existential risk from climate change
