. & I introduced the Bezos Act a month ago asking billion dollar companies to pay for their employees’ public benefits. We urged Mr. Bezos to raise wages to $15. The beltway economists crucified us. But Mr. Bezos listened. Today thousands of workers are better off.

This is not a technical issue. Austerity politics in Congress led to a slower recovery which paved the way for Donald Trump. And in Europe austerity politics paved the way for the rise of right wing nationalism. Progressives must unequivocally reject it!

⁩ argues that “Obama didn’t go enough to reduce the deficit.” Every serious economist believes the problem was he didn’t get a big enough stimulus from Congress! PAYGO is a bad frame precisely b/c it perpetuates austerity economics.

Not that my opinion matters, but I would send my students to places where hasn’t worked - Louisiana, Kansas and Wisconsin are just a few states who use baseline budgeting and they’re billions in the hole for it. What Congress needs is PERFORMANCE-based budgeting. 💡

This is one of the most compelling arguments against PAYGO made by one of the most respected economic thinkers of our time. We should have listened to him about a larger stimulus in 2008, and we should listen to him now. ⁦

Here’s my honest question : Would any of you give your Econ 101 students a good grade if they proposed PAYGO as a policy restricting government’s flexibility during downturns & ability to make long term investments?

Brilliant ⁦⁩. Is it constitutional for a President to shutdown gov’t & stop paying TSA & border patrol agents for their own pet cause? Should a President have the power to hold the basic functioning of our government hostage to their ideology?

We could have spent $1.5 trillion on a well-earned raise for 47 million households by expanding the EITC but instead spent it on a tax plan that benefits corporations and the investor class. Remember that the next time Republicans claim that they stand for ordinary Americans.

There are too many jobs in this country that pay low wages and give employees unstable schedules where the number of hours changes frequently. If Trump’s SNAP proposal becomes law, having hours cut to less than 20 per week could mean losing the ability to put food on the table.

FACT: The Green New Deal is overwhelmingly popular. Even though we didn’t get the select committee with legislative teeth, every Democrat should be pushing for these transformative solutions to solving the climate crisis.

It is good; Ro’s idea is better. Bring 85% of voters into the process rather than 30% (or who knows the precise numbers, but regardless the point is the same).

First step is give up the professors’ names, and to call it what it is - Ro Khanna’s bill for empowering democracy. Happy to rally behind that too.

This is how absurd PAYGO is: We campaigned in the Better Deal for $1 trillion in infrastructure spending over 10 years. Under PAYGO, if after 6 years that plan wld produce a deficit, it would not be in order — even if in 10 years it wld create 16 million jobs and revenue growth!

When millions of Americans come together to demand that Congress puts people over profits, the insurance companies, weapons manufacturers, and fossil fuel billionaires won’t stand a chance. Our democracy must reflect the will of the people, not corporations and billionaires.

This is the consequence of rolling back clean air and basic environmental standards. More young kids get diagnosed with cancer. This is heartbreaking and puts a human face on the policy fights we have in Washington.
