    Because of the Yellow fever scare, mosquito control in aircrafts became a matter of concern for government officials. It was feared that if mosquitoes could survive long distance air travel they could transmit yellow fever from an infected part of the world to another.

    Only 2 survived the return journey (from Karachi to Amsterdam to Cairo to Karachi), and died on the eve of reaching Jodhpur (in Western India) having nearly survived a distance of 9,580 miles over 6 and half days.

    In August 1935, 30 mosquitoes reached Amsterdam from Karachi in a Dutch K.L.M flight covering a distance of 4,599 miles in two and half days. Six mosquitoes died during the journey.

    ‘A raisin was placed in the cage for refreshment enroute.’ ‘56 mosquitoes were sent off.’ Most survived until they reached Sharjah at the end of the first day, but all died before reaching Baghdad, 36 hours’ journey from Karachi.

    An experiment was conducted in June-July 1935 to address this question. At Karachi airport, cages of mosquitoes were handed to the crew of Imperial Airways. ‘These mosquitoes were female Aedes aegypti.’
