Beautiful, pain-staking, and thought-provoking work by et al. showing that Tseltal Mayan children have no delay in language acquisition (compared to Western norms) despite minimal child directed speech.

So, when wondering why women haven't been more successful in running for President (), let's also keep in mind how we talk about future office-holders. 8/8

This linguistic bias against "she" pronouns for the next President happens in the wild, too: watch Stephen Colbert referring to the next president as "he" last summer when interviewing Marianne Williamson, a female candidate! @ 1:52 (start @ 1:36). 7/8

Encountering "she" references to the next President disrupted participants' reading, slowing them down in comparison with encountering "he" or "they". (Even female Democrats showed this pattern.) 6/8

Our evaluation paradigm revealed stronger evidence of learning than reported in previous work, and demonstrates the value of well-controlled psycholinguistic methods in gaining a fine-grained understanding of NLM learning potential. We will be giving a talk at SCiL on Jan 4!

Just resigned from the editorial board of Cognition (an Elsevier journal) over this. I've felt conflicted about being on it for a while, due to the Elsevier link, despite the fact that Cognition is a great journal. This was the last straw. Sigh.

Today I want to take a break from sharing research to share a personal story instead. It’s a story about my name, why I once decided to quit academia, why I came back, what I learnt from it, and why I’m grateful to have an audience here on Twitter.
