Trump’s decision not to use the Defense Production Act to procure and allocate medical supplies such as masks and ventilators is his bigggest failure (out of many, alas) so far in this crisis. It’s totally incomprehensible to me.https://twitter.com/NYGovCuomo/status/1242470818212466690 …

I do not understand the reluctance to use the federal Defense Production Act to manufacture ventilators. If not now, when?

May I ask you: couldn’t the reluctance be driven by provisions about price controls in the law? What I mean is, e.g. isn’t it more convenient for Ford to sell ventilators now, rather than under the pda?

(Note: not a sarcastic question. I read the bill and the most recent additions, but do not know how to interpret it RE prices).

Sorry to say but I’m not sure the hollowed-out government is capable of using the DPA effectively.

If trump were to prove that govt can solve problems of production and distribution then the whole facade of capitalism ends They would rather millions of people die than be proven wrong

Trump doesn't need the DPA. We are talking about production that is a tiny fraction of the industrial capacity of the United States. The Federal Government's check book gives him all the power he needs - if he gets his head out of his ass.

that's not... Well put it this way, the DPA may have a marginal effect, maybe even a large marginal effect - but is it as big an effect as Trump's dithering on ramping up concern and his push to get people back in the streets?
