I thought McCain and Romney supported carbon taxes. It seems that Trump has changed the GOP to, or resolved its contradictions in the most reactionary way. McCain voted for immigration reform. Trump kidnaps kids. Serious underestimation of Trump, I think.

Btw, you really need to add attack on the safety net to that parenthetical. It’s a good eg of your point as it’s always been a central R goal in which Trump never showed much interest. These folks operate from a playbook that says rich don’t have enuf & poor have too much.

There's a gamut of reason behind trump supporters. I think Dani's arrow is well placed though. Whenever trump tepidly dips his toe in mainstream opinions, he ends up pulling it back to appease his base. Instances that come to mind: daca, "fine people on both sides", vape ban
