/ On Friday I received this rejection from @F3FinCloud: "The team felt that you were very easy to talk to but some responses were lacking particularly around networking and HTTP concepts as well as setting up CI/CD."

/ I had a really good impression of the process until the final interviews. A well prepared interview-pack, nice first HR contact and a real-world take-home exercise that touches a lot of different areas and would give them a broad impression of the applicant.

/ I spend two days completing the exercise. It that was reviewed as: "very well done", "easily readable and understable" and "exactly the code we're looking for" (!). Here's it if you're interested:https://github.com/roccoblues/form3-account-api …

/ After the exercise was reviewed, I had 1,5 hours final interviews with 3 different engineers. All were very nice and I think we could have worked together very well. But still the obvious "tell me about TCP" and "how would you setup CI/CD?" happened. Fuck that shit.

/ I have 20 years of experience in this industry. I have debugged countless networking issues. I have setup multiple CI/CD pipelines. And most importantly, I have build more HTTP based micro-services than I ever wanted.

/ If reading TCP streams is important for the position then let's debug an issue together. Let's do the actual work we're supposed to do. But don't ask open-ended questions were you have a fixed answer in mind that I have to get right.

/ I could literally see how one engineer checked of his list of CI/CD use-cases and was disappointed when I couldn't come up with the ones he deemed most important.

/ Why do we do this to each other? Does anybody still really think that this is a good way to judge skill?

I feel your pain! But how I see it: if something like this is broken in the company, it's probably not the only thing (on the culture level). So for me these questions are nowadays a big red flag (at least for people with our experience level).

I have an opinion on this and it's not terribly constructive. It involves fire and screaming.
