The UK govt, currently lining up reporters inside Number 10 to decide their political suitability to attend its briefings, is also currently spearheading a Global Media Freedom campaign.

It is totally unacceptable for Number 10 to try to pick and choose which journalists can attend Lobby briefings. All credit to the integrity and professionalism of those journalists who refused to accept the briefing when others were excluded. This stuff matters in a democracy.

I also seem to remember Justice Sec talking about how unusual retrospective legislation is on after the London Bridge attack. Unfortunately the episode (2nd December I think) is not online. Perhaps someone at the beeb can dig it out!? 😊

Asked about TPIMS and Control Orders, Boris Johnson says he has concerns about "laborious surveillance" that sucks up resources and thinks, in this case anyway, the custodial option (lock em up) would have been more effective.

Johnson says 'really very few’' Islamist offenders can be rehabilitated…. The criticism of the experts is, of course, that - because of austerity - there are almost no programmes that even try

If that involves legislation that retrospectively keeps convicts behind bars for longer than their initial sentence stated, it will be hugely controversial.

NEW: On Streatham, Boris Johnson says time to "take action" to make sure "people in current stream do not qualify for early release". Justice Sec to set out plans later today.

Fishing & level playing field/standards are going to be two of the big sticking points this year, boils down to... - EU will ask for something set down in advance on both. - UK is prepared to keep standards high & do something on fishing, but wants flexibility & not a set text.

PM on doing a deal on fishing with EU... - Should be annual negotiations on fishing. - British fishing grounds are first and foremost for British boats. - Deal should reflect the fact that the UK will be an independent coastal state.

PM addresses EU concerns about unfair competition saying the UK has not left the EU to undermine standards. He says the UK barely uses state aid and leads on regulations & standards. Will the EU accept those assurances without something more firm in writing though?

Boris Johnson extolling the virtues of free trade saying that "politicians are failing to lead". Plenty will be raising eyebrows as the UK pulled out of the world's largest free-trading bloc on Friday.
