A thought on grad advising. When I was a second year, an announcement went out to our dept. with the abstract for a talk I was giving in the area talk series. A senior faculty member wrote back with a scathing critique (cc'd to my advisor, ). /1

Whether or not anyone supports the NIPS name change, there's no excuse for dismissing or making ad hominem attacks against the women asking for it. Also the other bad behavior described here is wack... a workshop that gives out "Romeo & Juliet" awards?

This little monkey spent some weeks in captivity recovering from injury. His family waited the whole time in the vicinity for him. Watch their reunion (and consider that modern science currently does not recognise the sentience of non human animals)

What if we could change the law so that, rather than just allowing conscientious objectors to be excused from the draft (e.g., Quakers during Vietnam), you could register as a conscientious objector and your tax dollars wouldn't be used for military purposes?

This is why we need voter-verified paper ballots and manual post-election audits of the paper. That's the only practical, low-cost defense that can detect and correct attacks like we showed.

BTW this book is written at an undergrad level so (a) if you feel like you don't know much, this is a great starter and (b) if you are say, a networking CS Prof, it reads very quickly but still provides a great broad intro.

Growing up, journalist Stephanie Foo never saw herself reflected in the (mostly white) TV shows she watched. The rare Asian-American girls on TV were all perfectly assimilated, wholesome sidekicks. Crazy Rich Asians shows us something different.

But there might be another factor here, too. I don't really know what it's like to be depressed, but one way I have of understanding it is "not being able to remember liking things". So maybe impostor syndrome can be understood as not being able to remember accomplishing things.
