Very happy Scott called out the Emperor-That-May-Not-Be-Wearing-Clothes here. I've tried bringing up similar concerns (concretely that many modern "AI" problems are likely irrelevant to future AGI alignment) with several AI policy people, to polite interest but middling response.

I think part of the frustration is that the reasonable fears aren’t being accepted either. The market doesn’t care about consequences beyond the horizon. That’s where regulations step in. But we don’t have those either, domestic or global.
