We GMU History professors would welcome our colleagues in the Economics department to sit in on our courses.
-
I'm sure that our many econ history professors would reciprocate the offer.
-
But notice I am not opining on economics.

Do you think circumstances under which you may only live near your family under pain of enslavement constitute extortion-free legitimate pressure?https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1122269282539274240 …
-
For Jefferson to offer only such constrained choices (without, say, "Return home a free human being" on the table, as Jefferson could as well grant) is extortion in itself. I seriously question your judgement on all issues relating to liberty if you cannot see this simple truth.
-
You aren't using the usual legal concept of "extortion", but some other concept.
-
If I restricted myself to legal judgement on all concepts, I would have no grounds to oppose legalized and institutionally entrenched slavery, it's true. You will find the concept of extortion I am referencing in any dictionary, though; an ordinary language definition.

You should literally just shut up. No one agrees to slavery. You’re legitimately discussing how circumstances don’t lead to “consent.” Ever. Take a Xanax and go to sleep. Please.

This poll is directly relevant to evaluating a criticism I'd heard of things I've said: https://www.overcomingbias.com/2019/04/taboogradations.html …

Are you still doing this? There is no enforceable contract with a slave. Any bargain made to entice a person into American race-based slavery would be fraudulent & a lie. I suppose it’s possible some sheltered enslaved person wld fall for this but not after seeing the horrors.
-
The Hemmings made a deal, they knew quite well what they were getting into, and Jefferson in fact made good on his side of the deal.
-
Why don't you list all the 'legitimate' reasons to submit to slavery. It ought make us understand why you think a 15 year old non-French speaking black woman with no support several centuries ago was able to make a 'legitimate' deal to become a slave
-
Robin keeps avoiding the issue of Hemmings age. He must know that, when age is taken into account, the fantasy that she consented to slavery and her rape goes out the window
-
You clearly haven't read a lot of his work. Robin gets wild on a lot of topics. This is nothing. And he would disagree about the age issue. One of many reasons I stopped following his section of the rational sphere a long time ago.
-
What do you think “he would disagree about the age issue?” I’ve seen multiple people post it in response to him and he’s yet to engage it. Even if he doesn’t believe in Ge of consent laws, he probably knows not to post that

Sally and James negotiated together and he was 24 at the time.
