There's a disturbing "if you have to ask, you'll never know" element at work here. To proffer hypotheticals - in order to determine the boundaries of offense/non-offense - is itself offensive. You either grok gender politics tacitly or you're hopeless, it seems.https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1089553828888932354 …

one nuance that this take misses imo is the concept of the public/private sphere. the private sphere is very useful for workshopping reaction, esp if you care about not engendering public offense

further, there’s a thread in here of continued entrenchment wrt the innocence of the original inquiry, even in the face of the blowback it has received in the public sphere that tenders this argument pretty insincere on the face of it

for the record, the survey in question reads like male gazey office erotica. it feels like it’s workshopping for the plotline of a softcore porn film

I'd be interested to hear how you would have worded the question, if you wanted to see how people would choose between the same options.

the problem with this question is that this isn’t actually a hypothetical — it happens. in reality, men tend not to take no very gracefully so in practice even proposing the arrangement is incredibly problematic — as a woman you wouldnt want to even be offered such a bargain

So we shouldn't ask poll questions about things that sometimes actually happen?

i didn’t think i implied that and I didn’t mean to if i did. my point is that your continued disbelief wrt the reception of the question you posed is frankly more problematic than the survey in and of itself.

What am I not believing? You say you don't like my poll, and I ask you how you'd reword it, but you won't tell me. I ask if you are saying people shouldn't ask these sort of questions, but you deny that. So I'm left not understanding you.
