I found this: "Drug trafficking is both an important driver of homicide rates in Central America and the main single factor behind rising violence levels in the region. " https://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTLAC/Resources/FINAL_VOLUME_I_ENGLISH_CrimeAndViolence.pdf … Another reason to legalize all drugs without requiring a prescription.

Aztecs were one of the most brutal civs known to history. Better question might be "what took you so long to reassert yourself, locally endemic psycopathy?"
-
Salvadorians are predominantly Spanish. The culture is Spanish.
-
Wrong. Pop there = 86% mestizo. There’s a small Iberian descended elite, but they don’t join the gangs. Mara members closer to 100% mestizo.
-
Mestizo is mixed and they're mostly Spanish.
-
Wrong again. mtDNA = 0%, Y chromosome = ~75%. Get what that means? All the great grannies are native, only 3/4 or the great grandads are European. Mestizo = ~63% native. That is NOT mostly Spanish.
-
Hmm I read something different. Still 35% or so Spanish.
-
Almost there. Now add back the fact that El Salvador does NOT resemble Spain in homicide rate. 85/100k vs 0.7/100k. So if there’s one place we should NOT look in our quest to explain this, it’s Espana. Aztec art offers a better clue. It’s murder all the way down.

BTW El Paso TX has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the USA so it can be done. Probably we should spend more time looking for a solution the violence problem in Central America that we can contribute to as individuals.https://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2013/may/30/veronica-escobar/el-paso-leader-says-el-paso-safest-city-its-size-c/ …

Social science has a way to go, I'm not sure we know why the crime rate in the USA shot up in the mid 1960's. These are very important questions.

It sounds like they are taking "taxation is theft" way too literally. Seriously, with the money they pay in protection rackets, they could probably afford decent police. But the government can't just burn your house down when you don't pay taxes, so the gangs win.

I’d add lower economic prospects for legitimate jobs compared to joining a gang. Although something specific about the culture there probably plays a role.

Climate change will only accelerate these challenges globally as the tropics heat up as agriculture gets crushed.

They had a lot of training at American Higher learning institutions. No not Stanford but all the prisons they get sent to let them network and share skills. America exports crime PhD’s.
