As all Democrats running for US president are populists, the next president will be a populist, either one of them or Trump.

When ordinary public opinion differs from elite opinions, “populists” tend to favor the former.

A secret to sanity when talking politics/policy: refuse to engage debates expressed in terms of purposely-vague terms like “populism.”

The core meaning seems simple and clear to me - it is about ordinary vs elite opinion.

And do you think that word “elite” means the same thing in Trump’s mouth as it does in the Dems’?

Robin is careful to define his terms except when it comes to politics. Uses "racist", "populist", "sexist" etc with the same feckless abandon as CNN, never explains his terms. We're all supposed to somehow know what these -isms mean

Where do you find me vaguely using “racist” or “sexist”, other than when responding to accusations against me?

This seems a bit exaggerated to me, unless your definition of populism is so broad it can include virtually any politician. Which politician would you describe as not a populist?

Either Trump or a Democrat will be the next president. What a brave prediction.

President Trump may try to run on a populist message, again, but his policies are plutocratic and autocratic.

Biden is the front runner by a long way, precisely because he is NOT populist. He was a huge influence in Obama’s pivot toward the centre and is as DC as they come
