Janelle Shane je dodan/na,
tried to avoid hyperbolic chaos by reducing the sampling temperature from 1.0 to 0.8. now the neural net is playing it safer (arguably TOO safe in those 1st two patterns), but is it still going hyperbolic?pic.twitter.com/dYEeMBEJIV
Yes, the first one goes hyperbolic EXTREMELY QUICKLY. The second one is going to make a very dense tube, closed on one end. Is it cheating to teach it to calculate stitches at the end of the row & limit the difference between rows to something a few stitches above 2πN ?
Oh darn It's not cheating to restrict it to sensible ranges - it would just require some careful setup and standardization by someone who knows what they're doing.
Does the model know what the stiches are, geometrically? Or is it just stringing together text it finds in patterns to make something that resembles a pattern? There is a lot of math potential in crochet.
This model's doing the second thing - just trying to predict the letters and numbers that come after one another in a crochet pattern. There's definitely lots of room for improvement.
If that's all it's doing, it's doing a great job! For reference: If a stitch is x wide, here are the heights (American notation) of the most common basic stitches: ch 0.3x sl st 0.5x sc 1.0x hdc 1.5x dc 2.0x tc 3.0x
Things are complicated by the fact that the dataset probably contains some UK notation as well - and some archaic notation! I don't even know if it can do math with the numbers in the patterns - they're probably represented the same way as any other ASCII character.
Okay, now I want to write a crochet pattern interpreter in Python.
Any idea why the hyperbolic surfaces happen more often in crochet than with knitting? Is it something about training this one on curved surfaces, or does crochet offer more flexibility, i.e. more ways to get in trouble?
Could be a few factors, based on your training data set: 1) Knit lace patterns have equal numbers of increased and decreased stitches, either in one row or across multiples. SkyKnit may be more likely to reproduce this characteristic. (continued)
2) 95% of crochet hat patterns are started at the center top and worked in the round. That means your crochet pattern maker has really only seen increases, with very few decreases. 3) Parts of the pattern that increase take up more page space, & text, than constant-length rows.
